Moroccan Henna Lamps

Morocco is well known for its Crafts culture combining Arab, Andalusian, and Jewish influences. Creating usable every day items by hand in the form of art.

In Art shows and Trade Shows one of the items that people are most dazzled by are the Henna lamps.

Henna lamps are spectacular when they are lit. Creating a warm glow of light in the room transforming the ambiance completely.

They are equally beautiful when not lit, most of our visitors can’t help but run their hands around the shape feeling the beautiful texture and wondering how these lamps are made. They are always a wonderful conversation piece.

Where are Henna Lamps made?

Henna Lamps are created from century old traditions passed down from generations by Master Artisans from imperial cities such as Meknes, Marrakesh, Fez and outlining villages. It’s not uncommon in Morocco to see entire villages focusing on one specific genre of craft.  For example on village of 32 people will only make pottery, another will only make mirrors and so on. Depending on where they are located and what materials are local to them. The patterns and colors used also reflect the area where an item is created.

The Process of Henna Lamp making.

The frame is usually created from wrought iron bended and welded into various shapes and sizes.

The leather is created from goatskin tightly sewn to fit the shape of the frame. The leather is then stained with henna to give it an amber color, however natural dyes are also used to stain the leather in various colors of reds, blues, yellows and oranges.

Once the leather is on the frame and dried, designs and patterns are then hand painted using thicker henna base.

Each henna lamp is unique, created with different shapes, patterns and colors. You can buy them in the form of floor lamps, table lamps, hanging sconces, and chandeliers.
