Glass Art

What is Art Glass?

1. Art glass is almost exclusively used to decorate home.

2. In the broadest sense, art glass could be said to be decorative glass, as opposed to glassware with utilitarian purposes. Most of the time, a scratch or nick in an art glass can severely devalue it, so that they are not intended for practical uses. But that does not mean that they are completely useless. If it says “paperweight,” yes, it can be used as a paperweight.

3. There are various ways to create art glass:

- Molding: This type is also called pressed glass and is often made by machines. Some people think that molded glass is not art glass, while others think they still qualify for it as long as they are artistic and display high quality.

- Blowing: This is the most common method to make art glass in many studios. Each object would be a unique creation made by the artist. Until 1977, generally only blown glass was considered to be art glass.

- Hot working: Glass is manipulated with tools such as pincers and shears while glass is elastic.

4. Glassblowing is labor intensive and time consuming. Thus, historically only those who can afford to buy art glass could own them.

5. Art glass does not only include small works such as bowls, vases, and paperweights – it has become increasingly common for artists to construct architectural works.

6. Not all of art glass is handmade by one single artist. It depends on how you define it and what types of things you collect. For example, some art glass is not created by one artist, but by a team of artists. Some studios are more like factories.

7. Art glass is not the only type of glass that is collected. For example, depression glass, a type of cheap glassware that was distributed for almost free during the Great Depression, is now a collectible because it became rare over time.

8. Not all factory-made glass is machine-made and may qualify as art glass. Up to the 1930s, most processes in the factory were performed by hand.

9. Art glass is different from glass art, glassware, stained glass, and architectural glass.

10. Hobby glass is not considered as art glass. Professionals often do not recognize amateur work as such.

Kid Rock maintains a remarkable propensity for wearing his contradictions on his sleeve, and more than anything he’s previously released, Rock n Roll Jesus finds fuel in unresolved opposites. Paul Newman directed this poetic, sunlight- and memory-drenched film version of Tennessee Williams’s classic memory play. The casting is surprisingly adept, considering that several of the performers would seem to be too old for their roles. John Malkovich plays Williams’s stand-in, Tom Wingfield, a dreamer who lives with his domineering mother Amanda (a luminous Joanne Woodward) and his fragile, …
